To ‘eat’/‘ate’ (and leave no crumbs) means to do something flawlessly. Rooted in Black and queer ballroom culture (like ‘slay’).

Someone’s coolness or presence, scored in imaginary ‘aura points’ (+1000 / −1000). ‘Aura farming’ means acting effortlessly cool.

Being confidently, unapologetically yourself; also ‘agreed, and true.’ Reclaimed by rapper Lil B (‘The BasedGod’) ~2010.

Really good — most often delicious food. Rooted in African American Vernacular English. ‘Bussin bussin’ means extra good.

‘Cap’ means a lie; ‘no cap’ means ‘no lie / for real.’ From AAVE. ‘That’s cap’ = that’s not true.

Two senses: to excel (‘she cooked,’ ‘let him cook’) and to be done for or exhausted (‘I’m cooked’). Context decides.

Playful short form of ‘delusional’ — hopeful, unrealistic beliefs, said affectionately. ‘Delulu is the solulu.’

An exclamation of surprise or admiration. Rooted in AAVE as a stylized ‘God’ / ‘goddamn’; popularized by streamers from 2021.

Describes the vibe or energy something puts out — ‘it’s giving summer.’ From Black and ballroom culture.

Doing things to ‘maximise’ your appearance, from subtle habits (softmaxxing: skincare, mewing) to drastic measures (hardmaxxing: surgery). Roots in appearance-focused forums.

Pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth to define the jawline (tied to looksmaxxing), plus a ‘be quiet’ gesture. No solid scientific backing.

Mediocre, average, unimpressive — ‘that movie was mid.’ The sting is that ‘average’ is treated as a letdown.

Visibly outshining someone in looks or status. From looksmaxxing culture; now mostly used ironically.

Someone who acts robotically, without independent thought — like a scripted ‘non-player character’ in a game.

Slang for something weird, cursed or bizarre — not the actual state. From the ‘Only in Ohio’ meme.

An affectionate nickname — like ‘babe’ or ‘sweetie’ — for a partner, friend or pet. The most-searched Gen Z slang term.

Someone showing excessive devotion to a person who doesn’t reciprocate; now often playful. Note: can carry sexist undertones.

To lose your composure — snap or have an angry outburst. An AAVE term from the US South; viral on TikTok 2023–24.
