Specimen 084 · Judicium suspectii · Field Notes
Sus
Sus is short for “suspicious” — it describes something or someone that seems off, shady or untrustworthy. “That’s kinda sus” means “that seems questionable.”
Where sus came from
“Sus” as a clip of “suspicious” (or “suspect”) has existed in slang for decades. Its explosive modern popularity came from the 2020 multiplayer game Among Us, where players accuse each other of being “sus” while hunting a hidden impostor. The game turned “sus” into everyday Gen Z vocabulary.
What it means and how it's used
You call something sus when it seems suspicious or doesn’t add up: “he’s acting sus,” “that link looks sus.” It ranges from lightly joking to genuinely wary, depending on tone.
