What Ohio means
Shortened to just “Ohio”, it became a Gen Alpha descriptor for anything strange, cursed or cringe, taking over the “weird joke state” role once held by Florida. “This is so Ohio” means “this is so strange”.
It is most at home in slang-overload strings like “skibidi Ohio rizz”, where the point is to sound as absurd as possible. In those, Ohio carries no meaning at all; it is there for the rhythm.
Where it came from
The joke traces to a 2016 Tumblr post of a bus-stop sign reading “Ohio will be eliminated”. That kicked off the “Ohio vs. the World” trend, in which the state was cast as a strange, hostile place for no reason at all.
By 2021–2022, “Only in Ohio” videos — pairing surreal, dysfunctional clips with the claim that they are normal in Ohio — went viral, often set to Lil B’s “Swag Like Ohio”. The state became a setting for anything cursed.
When it was first seen
- 2016: the “Ohio will be eliminated” Tumblr post.
- 2021–2022: “Only in Ohio” compilations spread on YouTube and TikTok; “Ohio” starts working as an adjective on its own.
- 2023: the word joins the brainrot bundle (“skibidi Ohio rizz”). By 2025: Merriam-Webster has a slang entry for “Ohio”.
How it spread
Ohio spread as a format before it spread as a word. “Only in Ohio” is a caption you can put on any bizarre clip, and bizarre clips are infinite. The song gave the format a soundtrack, and the soundtrack gave it a TikTok life.
The word then detached from the videos. Children who never saw a compilation still say “that’s so Ohio”, which is the sign a format has become vocabulary.
Variations
Only in Ohio: the caption. Ohio final boss: the most cursed thing in a series. Skibidi Ohio rizz: the nonsense string. “Ohio” as a bare adjective, the current form.
Is it still in use?
The Ohio joke is well-worn. It still gets a laugh, but mostly a knowing one, and it now appears more in parodies of brainrot than in brainrot itself. The tells: adults use it to signal they know the slang; children have moved on to newer cursed places.
Our read: fading — still lands, but everyone has heard it.
