Dupe

A “dupe” is an affordable duplicate — a cheaper product that looks or performs like an expensive one. “This perfume is a total dupe.” Finding a good dupe is a genuine flex.

Where it came from

Short for duplicate, “dupe” grew up in beauty and fashion communities, where influencers built entire followings on finding cheap alternatives to luxury products. It spread from there into general shopping talk.

Why it matters culturally

Dupe culture is a quiet rebellion against price: it reframes buying the cheaper thing as being smart rather than being unable to afford the original. It pairs with drip — you can have the look without the logo.
