Where it came from

The phrase grew out of Black and Latine LGBTQ+ ballroom culture and the drag scene, where it is closely related to “serving” a look or “giving” a certain energy — a performer “gives” the category, and the judges say what it is giving.

It spread widely on TikTok around 2021 as a flexible way to name a vibe, and — like several viral phrases — it is worth recognising those roots.

When it was first seen

• Ballroom culture, New York, from the 1960s–70s: “giving” and “serving” as judging vocabulary.
• 2019: influencer Rolling Ray Harper uses it repeatedly on Divorce Court, often credited with its modern popularity; it is a staple on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
• 2021: the TikTok breakout; the phrase becomes a caption template and dictionaries begin to cover it.

How it spread

The vector was television first — drag competition shows taught a mass audience the grammar — and then TikTok, where a phrase that ends in a blank is a perfect caption: everyone fills it differently.

It travelled with “slay” and “ate”, which come from the same rooms, and the three now form the basic praise vocabulary of the platform.

Variations

It’s giving ___: the template. It’s giving: the bare form, meaning the vibe is self-evident. Giving as a verb on its own (“the fit is giving”). Not giving: the negative, a gentle read.

Is it still in use?

“It’s giving” is a stable, flexible phrase — safe. The tells: brands have adopted the template, and “it’s giving” with a blank has become a joke about the phrase itself. It shrugs both off.
