What larping means
Larping is a charge of performance. The larper has the costume — the vocabulary, the aesthetic, the props — without the substance. Calling it out is a way of saying: I can see the seams.
It belongs to the era’s central obsession, detecting the fake. Alongside “that’s AI” and clocking, larping is part of a vocabulary built for calling out performance. Authenticity is the highest currency; being caught larping is the fastest way to lose it.
Where it came from
The original meaning: LARP = Live Action Role Play, the entirely wholesome hobby of dressing up and acting out fictional adventures, usually in a field, sometimes with foam swords.
The slang sense borrowed the idea of playing a character and turned it into an insult. To “larp” as something is to cosplay an identity you do not actually have — “he’s larping as a CEO”, “she’s larping poverty”. The accusation is inauthenticity, not fun.
When it was first seen
- 1980s onward: LARP as a hobby term.
- 2010s: “larping as” becomes forum shorthand for someone playing a role online they do not hold in life.
- 2026: the TikTok year, when teen slang guides list larping among the new words for calling out a fake.
How it spread
The vector was the authenticity economy. In a decade when everyone is a personal brand, a word for “your brand is a costume” was inevitable. Forums had it first; TikTok, where personas are the product, made it mainstream.
It spreads as a reply, like most callout words, and it spreads fastest against people who are visibly trying.
Variations
Larping as X: the standard form. Larper: the person. Larp as a noun for the whole act (“the CEO larp”). Larping for institutions and brands that perform values they do not hold.
Is it still in use?
Larping is current and rising in its “faking a persona” sense — fresh. The tells to watch: it being used for any ambition at all, which would make trying things a crime, and the hobbyists reclaiming it.
