NPC

NPC — short for “non-player character” — is slang for someone who seems to act on autopilot, without independent thought. It jumps from video-game terminology into a meme about conformity, and later a viral livestream trend.

Where NPC came from

In games, an NPC is any character controlled by the computer rather than a player — they follow scripted, repetitive behaviour. The “NPC” meme took off around 2018 (often as a grey “NPC Wojak” face), using the term to mock people seen as repeating opinions without thinking for themselves.

In 2023 it evolved into the “NPC streaming” trend, where creators acted like game characters — repeating set phrases and motions in response to viewers’ gifted emojis.

What it means and how it's used

Calling someone an NPC implies they’re predictable, robotic, or just “going through the motions.” It’s usually a light insult or joke, and pairs with the broader idea of ‘main character’ versus ‘background character’ energy.
