Based

Based means being confidently, unapologetically yourself — unbothered by what others think. It’s also used to agree with or admire a bold, honest opinion (“based take”).

Where based came from

“Based” was reclaimed by Berkeley rapper Lil B (“The BasedGod”) around 2010. He took a word that had been a negative (“basehead”) and flipped it into a positive philosophy of radical self-acceptance — “based means being yourself and not being scared of what people think.”

What it means and how it's used

Two common uses: describing someone authentic and unbothered (“she’s so based”), and agreeing with a bold take (“based and true”). Note: the term was later adopted ironically by parts of the online right, so its tone can shift with context — worth being aware of.
