Sigma

Sigma — from “sigma male” — is slang for a coolly independent “lone wolf” man, and more loosely a way to say something is “excellent” or “cool.” Among Gen Alpha it’s mostly used ironically, as in the joke “what the sigma?”

Where sigma came from

“Sigma male” is credited to writer Theodore Robert Beale (known online as Vox Day), who defined it around 2010 as an introverted counterpart to the “alpha male” in the manosphere’s pseudoscientific hierarchy of masculinity — a “lone wolf” who succeeds without seeking social status. Movie characters like American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman became reference points.

In the 2020s the concept went viral ironically: the 2022 “Sigma Face” meme, and the October 2023 parody song “Sticking Out Your Gyatt for the Rizzler,” pushed “sigma” into everyday Gen Alpha joke vocabulary.

What it means and how it's used

Today most usage is playful — “that’s so sigma” as a compliment for something cool or independent, or “what the sigma?” as a nonsense exclamation. It travels with related terms like rizz, skibidi and aura.

Context worth knowing

It’s worth being aware that the sigma/alpha framework comes from manosphere ideology, and some educators note that taking it seriously (rather than as a joke) can lead toward less healthy ideas about masculinity. Most Gen Alpha use, though, is ironic and disconnected from that origin. We note this plainly so the entry is accurate.
