What Tung Tung Tung Sahur means

The name is a sound and a meal. The character is a warning: eat before dawn, or the drummer comes for you. In fan lore he is the hero opposing Bombardiro Crocodilo, which makes the trend’s most sympathetic figure its only explicitly Muslim one.

For a family, this is the character with the best story to tell: a real tradition, a named creator, and a joke that is affectionate about the thing it references.

Where it came from

Every Ramadan in Indonesia, groups go through neighbourhoods before sunrise beating kentungan — traditional bamboo slit drums — calling people awake so they can eat before the fast begins. “Tung” is also the Sundanese word for a rumbling sound. It is a genuinely beloved communal ritual.

The character was created by TikTok user @noxaasht in February 2025. The meme takes that drumbeat — tung, tung, tung — and attaches it to an AI-generated wooden figure with a bat, reimagined as a kind of enforcer who comes for you if you ignore the call. So the “Italian” brainrot universe’s most-loved character is, in fact, a piece of Indonesian Muslim tradition that got absorbed by an Italian-branded meme wave. Worth noting, given how much of this trend has been criticised for its treatment of Islam.

When it was first seen

• Long before the meme: the sahur drum call, a Ramadan tradition across Indonesia.
• February 2025: @noxaasht posts the character around the start of Ramadan, when the reference is live and local.
• Spring 2025: the character is absorbed into the Italian brainrot universe and cast, by the audience, as its hero.

How it spread

The vector was the wave. Once the Italian brainrot format was established, any chantable creature could join it, and Tung Tung Tung Sahur had the best chant in the set. The audience adopted him, wrote him a role, and forgot where he came from.

He is not alone. Boneca Ambalabu — a frog fused with a tyre — is another Indonesian brainrot creature that got swept into the same universe. Variations

The hero role: assigned by fans. The bat and the wooden body: the AI image that stuck. Boneca Ambalabu: the Indonesian sibling. The mislabel: the mutation that matters most, and the one this page exists to correct.

Is it still in use?

The wave peaked in 2025; the character is embedded in games, toys and playgrounds. The tell we watch for is not decline but drift: the Indonesian origin disappearing from the story entirely.
