Tung Tung Tung Sahur
Tung Tung Tung Sahur isn’t Italian at all — it’s Indonesian. “Tung tung tung” is the sound of a drum, and sahur is the pre-dawn meal Muslims eat before fasting during Ramadan. In Indonesia, people walk the streets before dawn drumming to wake neighbours for sahur. That’s the whole reference.
The real tradition behind the joke
Every Ramadan in Indonesia, groups go through neighbourhoods before sunrise beating kentungan — traditional bamboo slit drums — calling people awake so they can eat before the fast begins. (“Tung” is also the Sundanese word for a rumbling sound.) The character was created by TikTok user @noxaasht in February 2025. It is a genuinely beloved communal ritual. The meme takes that drumbeat — tung, tung, tung — and attaches it to an AI-generated wooden figure with a bat, reimagined as a kind of enforcer who comes for you if you ignore the call.
So the “Italian” brainrot universe’s most-loved character is, in fact, a piece of Indonesian Muslim tradition that got absorbed by an Italian-branded meme wave. Worth noting, given how much of this trend has been criticised for its treatment of Islam.
The wider Indonesian layer
He isn’t alone. Boneca Ambalabu — a frog fused with a tyre — is another Indonesian brainrot creature that got swept into the same universe. The full Indonesian branch, and every other national branch, is mapped in World Brainrot. There are parallel German, Romanian and Russian brainrot waves too. “Italian brainrot” is really a global format wearing an Italian name.
