Cap / No Cap
“Cap” means a lie or exaggeration; “no cap” means “no lie — for real.” To “cap” is to lie; calling out “that’s cap” means “that’s not true.” Both come from African American Vernacular English.
Where cap came from
“Cap” as slang for lying or boasting comes from African American Vernacular English, with roots that reach back decades. It spread widely in the late 2010s and was cemented by hip-hop and TikTok; Dictionary.com traced how “no cap” came to mean “for real.” The 🧢 (blue cap) emoji is often used to call out a lie.
What it means and how it's used
Two everyday uses: “no cap” after a statement means you’re being genuine (“this is the best burger ever, no cap”), and “that’s cap” means you think someone’s lying or exaggerating. “Stop capping” means “stop lying.”
