What chat means
On a livestream, chat is the audience. Saying “chat” in a room is a joke about living as if you were streaming: narrating your own life to viewers who do not exist.
The two standard lines are “chat, is this real?”, used when something is unbelievable or looks AI-generated, and “chat, what do we think?”, used to ask a room, or nobody, for a verdict.
Where it came from
It comes from the ordinary mechanics of streaming: the streamer looks at the chat feed, reads it, and answers it. The word is the feed, and by extension the people in it.
The “chat, is this real?” style dates from around 2023 (Slate names iShowSpeed among the gamers who popularised “chat” that year). It began as an ironic question about obviously fake or AI-made clips, then became a general reaction.
When it was first seen
- Long before the slang: “chat” as the live text feed on Twitch and YouTube.
- 2023: the “chat, is this real?” phrasing spreads through streamer clips.
- Late 2024: mainstream coverage notes young people saying “chat” to friends, classmates and family in real life.
How it spread
The vector was watching. Children who grew up watching streamers learned that shape of speech before they learned other ways to react out loud.
It also spread because it is useful. “Chat” is a way to address a room without naming anyone, which is easier than saying “everyone”.
Variations
Chat, is this real? the flagship line. Chat, what do we think? asking a verdict. Yo chat: addressing a group. Chat cooked: blaming the imaginary audience.
Is it still in use?
This one is young and still spreading among the youngest users, which is where slang lives longest before adults notice. The tell we watch for is adults using it in meetings.
Our read: thriving.

Questions people ask
Why do kids say chat?
Because streamers say it. On Twitch and YouTube, “chat” is the live audience, and children who grew up watching streams talk to an imaginary one.
What does “chat, is this real?” mean?
It is a way of asking whether something is genuine, usually about a clip that looks fake or AI-made. Slate dates it to around 2023, when streamers asked viewers to spot doctored or AI-made clips.
Is my child talking to someone?
No. Saying “chat” to an empty room is the joke. It is imitating a streamer, not chatting to anyone.
Where else does streaming slang show up?
A lot of everyday words now come from games and streams: NPC, lore, side quest, main character, respawn. Each has its own page here.
