What demure means
The joke is the gap between the word and the situation. “Demure” is an old, formal word for modest and reserved; using it about eating a sandwich, parking a car or getting off a plane is what makes it funny.
The full run of words matters: very demure, very mindful, very cutesy. It is a rhythm as much as a meaning, which is why people quote it exactly.
Where it came from
In August 2024, TikTok creator Jools Lebron posted videos describing her workplace look as demure and mindful. The audio spread fast, used by other creators and then by very famous people.
The phrase then had a second, less funny life as a business story: other parties moved to trademark related phrases before Lebron, who then filed applications of her own. The scramble made international news.
When it was first seen
- August 2024: Lebron’s videos go viral; the audio is reused by millions.
- Late August 2024: coverage of the trademark scramble and of Lebron’s own position.
- November 2024: Dictionary.com names “demure” its Word of the Year.
How it spread
The vector was the sound. On TikTok an audio clip travels without its context, so the phrase reached people who had never seen the original video.
It also spread because it is safe for work and endlessly reusable: any ordinary action becomes a joke if you narrate it as very demure.
Variations
Very mindful, very cutesy: the rest of the line. Not very demure: the reverse. Demure-coded: the adjective form. The trademark story: the part most explainers skip.
Is it still in use?
This one has already had its year. It is quoted knowingly now rather than used seriously, which is what a settled catchphrase looks like.
Our read: fading. Still understood everywhere, but saying it in 2026 is a 2024 reference and people know it.
