What clanker means
Calling something a clanker is refusing to be polite to it. It is used on customer-service chatbots, delivery robots on the pavement, self-driving taxis and any device that talks back badly.
Underneath the joke is a real feeling: that machines are being put where people used to be. The word is a small, cheap way to say so.
Where it came from
It comes from Star Wars, where clones and soldiers call battle droids clankers. The word appears in the 2005 video game Star Wars: Republic Commando and in the animated series The Clone Wars (2008), and the sense of “robot” is older still: science fiction recorded it as early as 1958. It is onomatopoeia: it is the sound they make.
Its 2025 revival grew in Star Wars fan spaces, including Battlefront communities on Reddit, before people turned it on real AI products. From there it left the fandom entirely.
When it was first seen
- 1958: the earliest recorded use of “clanker” for a robot, in science fiction writing.
- 2005: the word appears in Star Wars: Republic Commando.
- 2008: the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars uses it for battle droids.
- July–August 2025: the term goes viral on TikTok, aimed at real AI products, and gets mainstream coverage.
How it spread
The vector was frustration with a target. AI arrived in customer service faster than anyone agreed to, and there was no rude word for it. Star Wars had one ready.
It spread as skits: people arguing with machines, refusing to thank them, or pretending it is a future where robots have feelings.
Variations
Clanker: the noun. Clanker behaviour: acting like a machine. Tin can, toaster, wire-brain: the alternatives people reach for. The debate: whether calling it a slur is funny or silly.
Is it still in use?
There is an argument attached to this one, and it is worth knowing before you use it. Some writers described it as “a slur for robots” and said the joke copies the shape of real prejudice; others say calling it a slur treats software as if it were a person. Both positions were widely published in 2025.
Our read: thriving, and worth using carefully. It is at its funniest aimed at a company that replaced people with a chatbot, and at its worst as practice for talking about anything as less than human.
