What brain rot means
Oxford defines it as the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially from over-consuming trivial or unchallenging material, and also the material itself.
It is used two ways: as a feeling (“my brain is rotted”) and as a genre (“brainrot” characters and sounds). The second is affectionate. Nobody says “brainrot” about a video they hated.

Where it came from
The first recorded use is 1854, in Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, complaining that society prefers easy ideas to hard ones. The complaint is older than every platform blamed for it.
The modern revival came from the people it describes. Gen Z and Gen Alpha applied it to themselves on the platforms said to cause it, which is why it never sounds like a lecture.
When it was first seen
- 1854: Thoreau writes about brain rot in Walden.
- 2023–2024: the phrase spreads on TikTok and YouTube as both a complaint and a genre label.
- December 2024: Oxford names “brain rot” its Word of the Year after a public vote with more than 37,000 participants.
How it spread
The vector was self-diagnosis. It is funnier to say your own brain is rotted than to say someone else’s is, so the word spread without argument.
It then became a genre name: the Italian brainrot creatures, the nonsense sounds, the deliberately meaningless videos. Naming the genre made more of it.
Variations
Brainrot: one word, the genre. Rotting: lying in bed watching videos. Bed rotting: the wellness version. Italian brainrot: the AI creature wave that took the name.
Is it still in use?
The term is now standard and shows no sign of going. The tell we watch for is it becoming purely a genre label, so nobody remembers it was a complaint.

Questions people ask
What does brain rot mean?
The supposed decline of your mental state from consuming too much trivial content, and also a name for that content. Oxford made it Word of the Year 2024.
Who invented the phrase brain rot?
Nobody online. Henry David Thoreau wrote it in Walden in 1854. Gen Z and Gen Alpha revived it about themselves.
Is brain rot real?
The word describes a feeling, not a diagnosis. Researchers study attention and heavy media use; the slang is a joke people make about themselves.
What is Italian brainrot?
A 2025 wave of AI-generated characters with pseudo-Italian names. It borrowed the word. There is a full page on it here.
